History: The Gate... I opened it. I'm the monster.
Personality:
For someone so small who knows very little about the world, El is a brave individual. Though she wasn't always. When first faced with a big bad monster, she literally brought it into her world because of her fear but it was through the friendships that she made that El learned how to be brave. El helped her new friends find their missing one even though it meant facing the monster again. While still sometimes a frightened girl with a lot of power, she finds the strength to be brave in the moments when its needed most. She defeated the monster, stood up to her papa and went out into the brand new world all on her own to find her family and herself. As someone who led a sheltered life, El is lacking in a lot of common knowledge but she's got the curiosity to go looking for new things. Through the television El had her connection to the world and learned about many things through it such as Halloween and costumes. She learned about friendship from Mike, Lucas and Dustin (even when it was rocky) and learned new things from Hopper in the year she stayed with him. It was El's curiosity that led her to track down her mother and then her sister. El is a sponge that is willing to soak up as much knowledge as she can. It doesn't matter if it's something as simple as an interesting chair or a glittering city - all of it seem so wonderous in her eyes. Despite having lived under a man who controlled every aspect of her life, El has a great deal of determination in her. Once she's made up her mind, it's nearly impossible for it to be changed - sometimes no amount of persuasion can sway her. It doesn't help that her stubborn streak is a mile wide. El has broken many rules set by others in order to do something she wanted, though it usually followed when someone tried to control her. Both her papa and Hopper have both clashed with El's stubborn determination where one resulted in a fight so epic the residual feelings blew the windows off the place. While her determination may occasionally result in fights, most of the time it's steeped in the feeling of wanting to help people. Especially her new friends. They were the ones who taught her what friendship was, they thought her powers were cool instead of freaky (eventually in Lucas' case), that friends weren't supposed to lie and that they would do anything for each other. At first she was afraid of what they'd think when they found out she opened the Gate and let the monster in but in the end, El sacrificed herself to save them. Since these are the first real bonds that El has made in her life, she is fiercely protective of them. Her most obvious and strongest connection is with Mike who took her in. They may have had bumps but his house was the first place she went after defeating the Demogorgon. She also often used her powers to listen to him in the year they were apart, even though El wasn't allowed to go to him. When it comes to her friends, she's willing to sacrifice her own freedom just to see them. El chose Mike over her own father-figure despite the fights they'd had. She even used her powers on bullies just to stop them from harassing her friends. After all they've been through, El is not just protective but also loyal. Man or monster, she cares about them above all - even her own family. Somewhere in the back of her mind El knows that she has the power to protect them and does come to this conclusion later on. The moment she knows Mike and the others (even Hopper too) are in trouble, El will go running back to them. Everything Hopper has done up until this point was to protect her but she had trouble seeing it that way for a long time - especially when he kept her away from the Party. Due to her circumstances, El can be a bit on the tempermental side. This is far more evident in the recent months of her life where she's been cooped up inside of a cabin by herself for a good portion of the day. There are rules to her life but to El they can sometimes seem stifling. It doesn't help that in recent days, Hopper kept breaking his word. The feelings just kept building up until she finally exploded and had a full-on break down. Her anger, her frustration can stay bottled up until it can no longer be contained and it can make things even worse. In the meantime, these emotions can cause her to do foolish things like go outside when she should be in hiding. There is also a little hint of jealousy in her. Not that El understands what that is exactly - only how she felt in the moment. When she saw Mike with a girl who was smiling, she reacted violently and pulled the skateboard out from under the girl. What El does understand is that it made her upset, made her angry and hurt. It may take her a while to figure out and actually comprehend what this feeling really is, especially when the source of said emotions is right in front of her. El won't know what to actually feel when standing next to Max and it may take her some time to truly warm up to the other girl. As someone "on the run", El is a bit on edge all of the time. It's something that never left her after escaping the Lab. Living with Hopper didn't help that much as he taught her even more ways to be cautious. She doesn't easily trust people even though El would like to. Of course it wouldn't do her any good to let her guard down entirely but the girl doesn't want to be hidden away forever. The moment she heard her aunt talking on the phone with someone about her, El bolted. To her, it was a lot like another man who had taken her in and gotten killed because of a phone call he made. Not to mention that her aunt was essentially tattling on her to someone close to her guardian figure. Since she's so tightly wound most of the time, El can easily lose control of her powers if she feels threatened. In the past, she's killed people because she was frightened and while she has a bit of better control the death count is lower than it had been. Most of the time, El has only killed people in self-defense either for herself or the sake of her friends. Though she has simply harmed others whether it was an accident or on purpose - throwing Lucas when a fight broke out or snapping a bully's arm for making Mike jump off a cliff. When living in the Lab, El's punishment was often to be thrown into a small room with no windows or light or a way out from the inside. This is the reason why she has a case of claustrophobia, disliking to be closed into small spaces like closets or bathrooms where there's little light. While it's not shown in more recent events, that is hardly a fear that's going to go away after everything she suffered through. For the most part, El doesn't seem to have an issue with the size of the cabin itself but she'd still prefer a bigger space at the very least. Or blanket forts are okay too. Another side effect of being a lab rat is that El's social skills are severely lacking. It isn't just her general vocabulary that makes it difficult for her to communicate with others, simply that she didn't have the normal childhood experience others did. While El did have her sister for a time (it's unknown how long exactly), most of her interactions were with adults who were only interested in her powers. In the twelve years she'd spent at the lab, El's room had very little in the way of normal items found in a kid's room. Until she met Mike and the others, she didn't even know what a friend was. |
Abilities/Skills:
Telekinesis: Due to experiments done on her mother while El was in the womb, El has developed many psychic abilities, telekinesis being the strongest. She's able to do small things like opening a locked door, flipping the switch on an old television to bigger things such as flipping a van completely over her head or pull a train car closer. There has been one instance of El taking that psychic energy and tear a whole between two worlds - though it was done out of fear. (Later on she shows she has the ability to close that "gate" even after it's grown much larger.) Using any of her psychic abilities causes her to bleed from the orifices in her head, usually the nose to start with and the more she uses it - the more start to bleed. Her face also takes on dark spots almost like bruising and El is typically too weak to move afterwards once she's used her power to cause this physical symptom. All she requires is to rest afterwards in order to regain her strength. Biokinesis: This is a form of telekinesis that allows her to manipulate various body parts. El can snap a limb, squeeze a bladder enough to make someone pee themselves or even cause them to suffer from a brain hemmorage until they die. Extrasensory Perception: If given a photo of someone, El can find them with her mind. She can listen to them and even sometimes interact with them even though they're physically miles apart. Her power is enhanced when she undergoes sensory depravation. It started out that she would have to be completely submerged in a Bathtub to find someone across the world or in another dimension but she's been getting stronger. El can now simply put a blindfold on, listen to static and find people. While in this state, she can manipulate radios so that the voice of the person she's honed in on can be heard over the speakers. She also has a strange intution about people, though this seems to be people who have some kind of contact with the Upside Down world she accidentally discovered. El knew that both Will and Barbara had been taken there from just a photograph. She also knew that Will had been hiding in his house in the other reality. Then finally there's psychometry, the ability to sense objects that belong to people. El was able to identify the game piece that belonged to Will (and which one was the monster despite not knowing Dungeons and Dragons). |
